Art
is a universal language spoken in varying dialects
of form and color. Appreciation of art work is truly
personal. No one can anticipate what might be found
appealing by another. The Springfield Old Capitol
Art Fair, with over 140 artists presenting works in
varying mediums, offers something for everyone. The
juried fair is the perfect venue for families and
friends to come together and enjoy a weekend of entertainment
and fine art.
The
Springfield Old Capitol Art Fair is a long standing
Springfield tradition, drawing hundreds of visitors
to Springfield over the past 48 years. As we approach
our 50th Anniversary, it can certainly be said that
the Springfield Old Capitol Art Fair has withstood
the test of time. The fair continues to draw thousands
of visitors to Springfield in search of that particular
piece of art work that appeals to their senses. These
visitors find much more than they anticipate each
year. Visitors to the fair enjoy the beauty of the
newly renovated down town Springfield area, live music,
and delicious food offered by a variety of vendors.
However, most importantly, they have the unique opportunity
to appreciate a variety of art work presented in a
large array of mediums.
The
Old Capitol Art fair has made a commitment help the
youth of our community continue to grow in their understanding
and appreciation of the world of art. The childrens
art tent is open to children ages 15 and under, and
provides children an opportunity to purchase up to
three pieces of art for the price of $5 or less. The
art work in the tent comes from pieces selected to
be placed in the tent by the exhibiting artists. In
an effort to encourage our youth to pursue careers
in art, the Art Fair Board awards annual scholarships
to local high school artists who submit pieces of
work for judging. Each year one student is lucky enough
to also have their art work displayed on the Annual
Old Capital Art Fair Poster and other advertising.
The continued support of the City of Springfield and
the surrounding communities has made this fair an
ongoing success. The Art Fair Board owes great thanks
to the sponsors of the fair, whose contributions have
allowed this great tradition to continue. Additional
thanks is owed to our numerous volunteers. Our art
fair is the largest volunteer-operated art fair in
our country and we find that something to be very
proud of. The volunteer based nature of our organization
allows us to give back more to our community in the
way of scholarships and art work purchased for local
public buildings.
The
2010 Springfield Old Capitol Art Fair Board is proud
to bring this event to the people of Springfield and
surrounding communities. If you would like to learn
more about our history, or wish to get involved in
the fair, please visit the our web site at www.socaf.org.
We
look forward to see you at the 2010 Old Capitol Art
Fair!
